South Padre Island, Texas

A guide to the island, from the people who live here.

Beaches, sea turtles, kiteboarding, fish tacos, sunsets over the Laguna Madre, and the festivals worth planning a trip around.

Welcome to South Padre.

South Padre Island is a 34-mile barrier island at the southern tip of Texas, separated from the mainland by the Laguna Madre — one of only six hypersaline lagoons in the world. The Gulf side is what most visitors come for: warm, calm, sandy-bottomed water that's family-friendly all summer. The bay side is where you'll find dolphins, kiteboarders, and some of the best fishing in the state. Athena Ares sits two minutes from the Gulf, so you can be in the surf before your coffee gets cold.

The water on the South Padre Gulf side is warm by April, swimmable by May, and bath-warm from June through October. Most of the island's public beaches have lifeguards in season, restrooms, and rinse-off showers. From Athena Ares, the closest access is a two-minute walk straight across the street.

Sea turtles & wildlife

The kind of nature you tell people about.

  • Stand-up paddleboardingThe bay is glassy in the early morning. Rent boards or take a guided dolphin SUP tour.

Fishing

Inshore, offshore, and right off the pier.

The Laguna Madre is a world-class flats fishery for redfish, speckled trout, and snook. Offshore charters target red snapper, kingfish, mahi, and the occasional sailfish. If you're not into chartering, the lighted bay piers are open all night.

  • Bay fishing chartersHalf- and full-day inshore trips for redfish, trout, flounder. Great for families and beginners.
